Reference MUA - console interface

Advanced features but bad design. Implementation of IMAP is not efficient.

Advanced features, good design, no multithreading. Some people think that the user interface is less good than mutt. Good implementation of different mail access, but no cache.

emacs-gnus

Advanced features, implemented in emacs-lisp. It runs in emacs, then, takes advantage of emacs. The interface is very slow. Use only MH. Implementation of IMAP is not efficient.

sylpheed - a GTK+ based, lightweight, and fast e-mail client

Graphical user interface. Advanced features. Mail retrieving is independant from the interface but most of client algorithm features are not independant from the interface. Implementation of IMAP is not efficient.
